The story behind Mexico SHG Organic

While coffee is grown in 15 states in Mexico, 90% of it comes from four states: Veracruz, Oaxaca, Puebla, and Chiapas. There are more than 500,000 coffee farmers in Mexico, with 95% being smallholders with less than three hectares, of which 85% are indigenous Mexicans. Mexico is one of the world’s largest producers of certified organic coffees.

This organic coffee comes from GRAPOS, a farmer group in the Tapachula and Comitan regions of southern Chiapas. GRAPOS started in 2007 with only 90 producers and has since grown to represent over 4,600 farmers in 2023. This represents over 300 communities in the region and a total organic production of over 100,000 quintales (100kg in parchment) per year. These farms are at altitudes of 1300-1800 meters above sea level.

Chiapas borders Guatemala and is contiguous with Huehuetenango, so these coffees tend to have similar cup profiles, bright and clean acidity, and light fruit and cocoa notes.
